Glaucoma Evaluation in Calgary

Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve. This condition can result in vision loss and blindness, but if it is detected and treated early, there is a better chance of protecting against serious vision loss. At Premier Eye Care, we screen for glaucoma and provide our patients in Calgary, AB with treatment. Early diagnosis can be very beneficial in the treatment and management of the condition.

In its early stages, glaucoma can be difficult to detect and diagnose. Several different approaches must be taken in order to accurately assess whether a patient has glaucoma or to accurately assess their risk for developing the disease. Experienced ophthalmologists, optometrists, and technical support staff are needed to do this. The tests that are part of a glaucoma screening are painless, non-invasive, and safe.

Measurement of intraocular eye pressure (IOP)

Higher pressure in the eyes is considered a major risk factor for the development of glaucoma. Optic nerve damage is even possible and becomes more likely as the IOP increases. The pressure measurement can be made more accurate and informative when the corneal thickness is also measured.

Assessment of the optic nerve

A device known as a slit lamp biomicroscope is used in this non-invasive test to determine whether or not there are changes in the optic nerve that are consistent with a diagnosis of glaucoma. Advanced imaging techniques may also be used to photograph the nerve fiber layer of the optic nerve. These instruments can show damage caused by glaucoma at a much earlier stage than can be detected through other methods. They may also show progression sooner than other methods.

Evaluation of the peripheral visual field

Damage caused by glaucoma can produce defects in the visual field or peripheral vision that are characteristic of the disease. With standard visual field testing, glaucoma damage may not be obvious until it has reached a more advanced stage. Advanced techniques such as Short Wavelength Automated Perimetry can sometimes detect damage to the visual field earlier than with more standardized tests.

The tests performed for a patient will be individualized to their condition and their needs. If you have concerns about your eye health, make an appointment at Premier Eye Care today. We look forward to helping maintain the eye health of our patients in Calgary, AB.
